Hygiene Routine

What to Work On From Home

  • Begin with establishing a routine for self care/hygiene.
  • Using a visual picture or written checklist is helpful. Begin with tasks that the student is already capable of, i.e. combing hair.
  • Add items as the student is able to independently complete the previous tasks.
  • Allow the student to choose items they prefer – scent of soap, colour of brush or comb etc.
  • Have conversations about the importance of hygiene at home and in public. Offensive smells and how to eliminate them with good hygiene.  If there are pets in the home they can be a good example to use in caring for them so they are clean.

Educator Considerations

  • The school follows the same structure as being used at home. A checklist and specific tasks that all persons would be required to do at a workplace or in a school. i.e. washing hands after using the washroom, combing or brushing hair mid-day.
  • Talking about hygiene in an open manner as part of their curriculum, making it a topic they will become comfortable about.
  • Reading books/stories that involve cleanliness or hygiene in the text will assist students to learn about the importance of cleanliness.
  • Set up steps so the student will become independent in their self care skills.
